Mystery as woman shrinks to size of toddler after birth of her son(Photos)

A rare medical condition has caused a grandmother
to shrink to the height of a toddler - two feet tall.
Looking like a small baby , Shanti Devi, 60, spends her
days cuddled up and lying on a cot, mumbling or
singing alone and has become a tourist attraction in
her Indian village.
Her limbs have shrunk and twisted and have become
so rigid that any movement is impossible for her.She
cannot open her hands and spread her legs or even tilt
her head and entirely relies on her children for
assistance.

She has been like this for more than two decades.
Devi once stood five-feet tall but in the past 25 years
she has gradually shrunk to just two-feet tall.
"I have been living like this for nearly 25 years
now. This is painful. I get bored but I can do
nothing on my own. I miss sitting and waking
and meeting my friends or watering plants,"
said Devi in a hoarse voice.
It all started after the delivery of her third child, a
son.Husband Gangacharan Kushwaha said:
"She was perfectly healthy and leading a
normal life when we got married thirty five
years ago.
"Problems only started after the delivery of our
third child, a son. She had become weak and
very slow. After three months, she complained
of severe pain in her bones that had become
stiff. After a couple of months, she noticed
changes in her body as she was looking
smaller," "She told us but we did not believe her
until we realised she had shortened by half feet
in just four months. However, she could walk."

Shanti's condition deteriorated and she became
completely bed-ridden after a thatched roof from a
neighbouring hut fell on her legs.
"One day, while neighbours were fitting their
new thatched roof, she was looking at it and it
accidentally fell on her legs. After that accident,
she could not get up on her feet."Her bones had
become weak and tight. She complained of
severe pain and eventually lost physical
strength and became bed-ridden," added the 62-
year-old farmer.
While her peculiar condition baffled her family and
neighbours, Gangacharan sought help from several
doctors but unfortunately, no for treatment or
medicine could work and heal her.

Shanti has become an attraction in her village in
Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh in north India.People from
far away villages throng to her small shanty to take a
glimpse of her.
But Dr Pankaj Srivastava, a local physician, believes
her condition looks like Brittle Bone disease or
Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
He said: "I cannot say anything without
diagnosis but it looks like to be a case of OI, a
genetic disease where bones become fragile and
break easily. But without examination, nothing
could be said."

Mr Ibu narrates how LUTH ’s negligence allegedly killed his 2 year old son

John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu has cut a
niche for himself in the movie industry, notably for
being a comedic actor, but in an interview with Punch,
he has revealed that despite his commitment to making
people to laugh, he has had cause to be unhappy,
even bitter, on some occasions.
According to Okafor, negligence on the part of Lagos
University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) had a role to play
in the 2011 death of his 2 year old son who had just
been released from kidnappers. He was so bitter that
he almost instituted a court action against the
management of the hospital.
Read his ordeal after the cut.
“The matter was actually between the Paediatric
Department of the hospital and me. It was in 2011. My
wife and our two-year-old son had been kidnapped.
After I paid the ransom demanded and they were
released by the kidnappers, I returned to Lagos from
Enugu.
“Then on January 18, 2011, my son fell ill. He was
diagnosed with inflammation of the liver. The hospital
suggested that he should be scanned. At the same
time, I was informed that I could take my son out of
the hospital to get the scan done elsewhere. But the
same people later declined, saying that everything had
to be done in the hospital because he was too weak to
be taken outside.
“After a while, I was told that there was no electricity
in the hospital. When I asked if there was no standby
generator, they said there was no fuel in it. I offered to
pay for fuel only to be told that the man that operated
the generator was not around. When I left the place
and got back later, the man still had not returned.
Then I was advised to write an application and to
submit to the admin department.”
After writing the application, Okafor found that there
was nobody to receive and treat it. While he was
waiting, he was told that his son’s condition required
blood transfusion. The actor did everything possible to
ensure that the ailing boy was given treatment at the
hospital, but his efforts were in vain. Finally, the little
boy gave up the ghost.
“That was how my son died. Later, one of the doctors
came to me and, without even sympathising with me,
asked if I could release my boy’s corpse to him so that
they could cut it open and use it to teach other
medical students. In that moment, I felt like
committing murder for the first time in my life.
“When I told my lawyer what happened at the hospital,
he was shocked. He said it was actionable. I told him
that I was ready to take the hospital management to
court and sue it for $100 million in damages because
my son’s death was caused by the carelessness of the
professionals whose duty was to save his life. But my
lawyer advised me to let go”.

Akeem Balogun (Olasco Films) is threatening my life, despite owing me millions- Actress Yewande Adekoya cries out

Read her story after the cut…
Good day Nigerians. My name is Yewande
Adekoya-Abiodun. I am a happily married
movie producer, screenwriter and actress. I
have been practising since 2002 and i am
presently a bonafide member of Tampan. I
want to beg Nigerians all over the world to
please help me tell Akeem Olatunji Balogun
(Olasco films) to leave my life alone. If
anything bad happens to me, Nigerians,
please hold Akeem Olatunji Balogun
responsible.
He has marketed my movies for about six
years now and i have nothing to show for it
financially. I do not even have a car of my
own. He sold igbodudu 1&2, omo
elemosho1&2, kudi klepto1&2, Emere, Irawo
meji and Kurukuru1,2,3. This man is presently
owing me the sum of 2million naira and he
has refused to pay because he feels no one
can challenge him. He has been owing me
since 2014. When he owes you, you dare not
ask for your money, if you do, he will start
war just like the one he has just started. He
is also not the type that signs a contract due
to his dubious character. He prefers verbal
agreements.
He is very influencial in the yoruba movie
market, so it is almost a waste of time to
report him to anyone there. I know this
because i had earlier reported him to several
marketers who have good relationship with
him, still no result. I called the president of
the yoruba marketers association, he didn’t
pick my calls. I was eventually able to speak
with his assistant who sympathised with me
and then told me that little or nothing could
be done about the matter. Olasco has
humiliated and oppressed me for too long,
and now, i feel it’s time to speak up.
The last business deal i had with him that
really pissed me off was Kurukuru, a three
part movie i wrote and produced while i was
8months pregnant in 2015. He released
kurukuru online and on DVD in nov 2015, and
then claimed we didn’t make any profit from
the 3 releases of the movie despite the huge
success record the movie had. I decided to
keep mute about everything since last year. I
decided to keep mute about everything since
last year, because i do not like to fight
anyone or make noise over anything
whatsoever.
He sent me an embarrassing sum of N300,
000 which he believes should serve as my
payment for Emere, Irawo meji and Kurukuru
part1,2 and 3. I quietly moved on with my life
and faced my work squarely, but Mr Akeem
Balogun will not let me be. He keeps
oppressing and terrorising anyone i choose
to do business with.
He even went as far as influencing movie
marketers and some movie producers to stop
casting me for movie roles. Why? What
exactly did i do to you? What exactly do you
want from me? Mr Akeem Olatunji Balogun
please leave me alone, i refuse to be enslaved
by you, like you enslave some others. You
don’t pay them and you also won’t let them
do business with other people. Maybe it’s
because i refused to date you even after all
these years, that is why you are strongly
determined to destroy me.
I serve a living God Mr Akeem and the God i
serve will never allow darkness overcome
light. Olasco films has refused to pay me my
royalty for the three movies: Emere, Irawo
meji and Kurukuru part1, 2, 3 and i have not
yet taken him to court for that, and he is
here, strongly advocating against me doing
business with other marketers and film
distributors of my choice.
I know you are tough but my God is tougher
than you. Don’t try HIM. I still have the
bounced cheque of 1million naira that you
gave me in 2011. May my God reward you
accordingly. My beautiful fans and fellow
Nigerians all over the world, pls help me tell
this man to leave me alone oooooooooo if he
does not want the wrath of God to descend
on his entire household.
High Regards,
Bukola Ogunrinde

Bob Manuel Udokwu Quits Nollywood For Politics , Grants First 2016 Interview

Excerpts from Nollywood actor cum Anambra Governor
Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment, Bob Manuel
Udowku.
What Does Your New Job Involves

It involves evolving strategies for engaging a lot of
youths, discovering talents and making the state an
entertainment hub through the relevance of the
entertainment industry in the contemporary Nigeria and
how it will impact positively on the society.
What idea have you given to the governor on
entertainment that can generate revenue to Anambra
State government?

There is something that happens in the creative industry.
You may have plans to do something innovative. Once
you discuss it openly, people will steal the idea. What I
would like to say is that there are things we are already
doing, there are things we are putting in place and these
things will generate employment; they will impact
positively on the society, but, then we don’t want to
discuss them openly to avoid plagiarism of one’s ideas.
It has happened before and I have learnt from that
experience. So we don’t want to start mentioning our
ideas one by one here. Don’t forget that with the
situation in the country at the moment, various state
governments are becoming more creative. We don’t want
somebody else to run away with our idea before we start
to implement it. I can assure you that there is a lot. The
Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, is very
much interested in developing the entertainment, culture
and tourism sectors of the economy of the state. That’s
why he created the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs, Culture
and Tourism.
Now that there is recession, how do you think the
entertainment industry can boost Nigeria’s economy?

The policy of the current administration is not
encouraging the entertainment industry, because the
government has not even adopted any policy that will
seem to encourage the entertainment. The last
administration was the first and only one so far to see
the viability of the entertainment industry. Former
President Jonathan actually did something by
encouraging the industry through provision of different
sources of funding.
People seem to forget so easily that at some time during
the last administration, Nigeria overtook South Africa’s
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) due to two components:
oil and gas, which is naturally given to us by God, and
Nollywood, which we created virtually out of nothing. I
am glad and proud that I am part of the foundation of
Nollywood, so if you say given the situation of the
country, what is Nollywood doing to sustain itself, I will
say Nollywood has always from the beginning sustained
itself till the last administration intervened.
The industry is in doldrum and has gone back to self-
help. There is no more government assistance at the
moment, rather government agencies have been creating
road blocks and unhelpful policies for Nollywood, but we
have persisted. Jonathan administration supported the
entertainment industry and the result came out
positively, so much so that it helped Nigerian GDP to
overtake that of South Africa.
What is the implication of what I am saying now? What I
am saying is this: let the federal government look into
the entertainment sector, and call few select
professionals in the industry. They don’t need to make
noise or propaganda about it, but quietly convoke a
meeting of core professionals in the entertainment
industry for us to meet with the authorities and devise a
way forward, so that Nigeria will gain. But the
government is ignoring a very viable and lucrative
industry which is the highest employer of labour outside
the civil service.

There has been a deafening silence about the
entertainment sector. Tourist sites abound here but the
leadership of this country has made them unattractive to
operate, so Nigerians go and buy what they have already
in the house from outside. Why don’t we develop the
ones we have here? That is what Nollywood has done
here, to show Nigerians that we have home grown
talents that are world class and recognizable.
So the government should evolve a strategy where
entertainment, culture and tourism sectors of the
economy will be given priority in its economic recovery
programme. As rich as America is, it does not joke with
its entertainment industry. They are exporting
entertainment across to the globe. If America as the first
world country can see the viability of that industry and
utilise it to the full, why do we always pretend as if it
does not exist? The creative community here is very
resilient, very hard working. The industry has nothing to
fall back on; we don’t have the technology, we don’t
have the funding yet, Nollywood remains number three
globally in terms of output.
You have acted in more than 100 films and they were
shot on locations outside Anambra State, yet there is no
film village in Anambra State, why can’t the government
build a film location to attract investors?

I think there is a misunderstanding of the usage of that
word film village. I think we use it in a very wrong way.
People look at film village as a place where you go to, a
large expanse of land to put a sign board to say this is a
film village. Did anybody see any film village before
Nollywood started? We have shot movies that depicted
cities, 21st century cities in Nigeria.
We have also shot movies that depicted Nigeria in the
1800s in this same country, yet you cannot go to a place
and say this is a film village. Hollywood, for instance, is
not a film village in America, but a section of Los
Angeles where a lot of film corporations have their
offices. People outside the industry talk about film
village so much; the whole of Nigeria is a film village. I
was the longest anchor of the Gulder Ultimate Search for
more than five years.
It exposed me to most spectacular topographies that this
country can boast of. There were locations that we came
to and if anyone had told me that they exist in Nigeria, I
will not believe. The answer is, Nigeria is one huge film
village, and if you are talking about Anambra State
creating a film village, Anambra State is already a film
state.
As we speak, so many films are being shot in Anambra
State like Ogbunike Cave, Owere Ezukala Cave and Water
fall etc. There are spectacular sites in Anambra that are
unbelievable. To answer you, Anambra State is seriously
doing a lot through the newly created Ministry of
Diaspora Affairs, Culture and Tourism. If I begin to tell
you what Anambra State is doing about encouraging
movie making in the state, you will marvel. Anambra
state is indeed, “the life of the nation” in every
ramification.
Why has Anambra State government not made people
like Chika Ukpala, Pete Edochie and host of others as
brand Ambassadors?

The government does not need to invite them and
pronounce them brand Ambassadors; by the nature of
what we do we are brand ambassadors of Nigeria
already. I am glad you mentioned Pete Edochie and
Chika Okpala. Nigeria has already recognised them with
national honours, and Anambra State holds them in very
high esteem.
Two weeks ago, I was with two of them in a function in a
Owerri where another colleague in the industry opened a
radio station. They are people we respect and Anambra
State has virtually more entertainment people than any
other state in this country. When government is having
function, they are invited, but if you say for them to be
singled out for appointment that is political. That
decision resides with whoever is the Chief Executive.
Their place in Anambra society and in the eyes of
government is much higher than political appointment.
You made a provocative statement when you said only
bloodshed will improve the power sector. Meanwhile, we
have not forgotten the scar of the civil war and you are
drumming for another?

I was quoted out of context in the social media. The
question was, do I feel that steady power supply will be
back in this country? I said no, if that will be achieved
there will be bloodshed. The issue of power problem in
Nigeria did not start overnight. It was a gradual thing. I
remember 20 years ago, those who owned generators
were out of the ordinary.
Today if you don’t own a generator, that is out of the
ordinary. That is because successive governments failed
in maintaining whatever was left for us in the power
sector due to corruption. Some people became richer
than the state and there was a serious decline. Today
some people import very big generators, what they call
“silent generators “.
I don’t want to call any brand name. Then the small
ones that are called “I better pass my neighbor”, today is
no longer I pass my neighbour but “I be like my
neighbor” because everybody has it. Today, people
import container loads of generators every day. The
problem we have in this country is that we pretend as if
certain things do not exist until things get bad and the
result becomes very catastrophic. People are spending
money importing these generators and the big
generators are imported by very big influential people in
this country.
From my research, some of them own shares in the
companies that manufacture these generators abroad.
How do you think the people that have been importing
these generators will fold their hands and allow
government to make power available 24 hours in this
country? They will lose money and their businesses may
collapse because they have been tied up with foreign
exchange.
Consequently, they will sabotage government’s effort,
and for government to fight back that sabotage, people
will die. That was what I meant, that we will have
bloodshed before we can have steady power supply in
this country. It is not about warfare. It is a war you fight
with the people you don’t know.
You were appointed in the last administration under Mr.
Peter Obi and now with present government; do you
have any political ambition?

Sometime in 2013, like you rightly said that I was in the
twilight days of former governor Peter Obi’s
administration. In 2014, His Excellency Chief Willie
Obiano, the current governor of Anambra State,
reappointed me, but I had to resign at some point to vie
for a ticket to represent my constituency in the State
House of Assembly. I didn’t get the nomination but the
governor graciously reappointed me.
The entertainment industry is all comers affair, a
stepping stone to make quick money, do you agree?

For those who aspire to be in the entertainment industry,
first of all I advocate education. In Nollywood , most
scripts are written in English which is our lingua franca.
Good education in a relevant field is pertinent. Where
somebody who studied medicine or electrical
engineering suddenly wants to be an actor is not
acceptable. You are depriving those who studied Theatre
Arts, literature, English alike.
But we have many who studied other fields and still find
themselves in the entertainment industry.

I know but it’s wrong. It is an aberration. Of course for
professionalism the industry is trying to put some
measures in place. The creative industry is not an
industry where there are strict rules. I have seen people
who are science inclined and they are talented, but it is
always good to go where you can develop that talent in
you. Acting is not all about reading script and dishing
out the lines. It goes beyond that and the viewing public
knows. We need guide the younger people who are
coming into the industry.
It is not bed of roses. There are lots of challenges. We
also need to evolve a system of training and retraining
our talents. A lot of higher institutions offer Certificate
and Diploma courses in Theatre Arts. It is a practical
based to lay good foundation to grow. If you have a
degree in another discipline you should take one year
off to go to some of these institutions and enroll for
professional grooming. That would also ultimately help
you to learn the discipline that comes with the
profession.

Police Arrests Woman For Kidnapping her Sister's Daughter (Niece) Over N3,000

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a
Ghanaian, Enyolam Believe, for allegedly kidnapping her
niece in the Ikotun area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Believe, who had been living in
Lagos for the past 17 years, conspired with her friend,
Agatha Aigbomiam, to commit the crime last Tuesday.
The eight-year-old victim was alleged to have been
kidnapped on her way to school and taken to Ogun
State by Aigbomiam.
The victim was said to have raised the alarm which
drew the attention of residents, leading to the arrest of
both suspects.
A police source said 43-year-old Believe and the
victim’s mother had searched for the child, including
reporting a case of missing person at a police station.
He said, “The suspect and the girl’s mother are sisters.
Believe, however, colluded with her friend, Aigbomiam,
to abduct the girl so that she could make money from
the mother.
“Their plan was that the friend would kidnap the child
and hide her somewhere in Ogun State, while she would
negotiate the ransom with the mother on the phone.
“When the girl went missing, the girl’s mother called
her and they both searched for the girl. She even
suggested that they should report the case to the
police. The mother never suspected that she was behind
the kidnap.”
The source said while people were looking for the girl,
the suspect was also trailing the movement of her friend
and the victim on the phone.
He said the kidnapped girl, while in captivity, raised the
alarm that Aigbomiam was not her mother and called for
help from some Ogun residents, who came to her aid.
The matter was said to have been reported to a
community leader, who invited the police.
The source said, “When the police discovered that
Aigbomiam was not alone in the crime and she was
receiving calls from Believe, they decided to play along.
They asked her to invite Believe to Ogun State.
“It was when she arrived that the police arrested her.
The case was subsequently transferred to Lagos State
where the offence was committed. That was where the
mother of the girl saw that her own sister was behind
her ordeal.”
The suspects, who were paraded before journalists at
the police command headquarters in Ikeja on Thursday,
confessed to the crime.
Believe said she hoped to make N30,000 from the
kidnap, adding that she needed the money for a
business.
She said, “I have my own children. I needed money
badly that time and I thought of different ideas, which
didn’t work. So, I decided to kidnap my sister’s
daughter and demand N30,000 ransom from her. I
involved my friend because I didn’t want to be the one
to take the girl from school. I don’t know what came
over me.”
Aigbomiam, a 42-year-old trader from Ekpoma, Edo
State, said Believe asked her to kidnap the victim after
she returned from a surgery in Benin.
“She said she wanted to use the girl to collect some
money from her sister. She just showed me the girl’s
school and I kidnapped her around 7.30am on Tuesday,
while she was going to school. I took her to my
relative’s house in Ogun State. I was stupid for doing
such a thing.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, while
advising parents and guardians to be vigilant over their
children and wards, said the suspects would be
arraigned in court at the end of investigation.

“There are some parts that have my personal experience

that I want to shoot in Jamaica. I just thought of a need
to do something that will blend with that culture and
will reflect Nigeria as well. Akpos is very adventurous.
He is not limited to his zone. That is why he operates

consequences.

APC’s Obaseki wins Edo Governorship Election

The candidate of the All Progressives
Congress, Godwin Obaseki, has been
declared winner of the Edo State
governorship election.
The APC candidate won majority of the
votes cast, getting a total of 319,483
votes, the Independent National
Electoral Commission, INEC,
announced.
Mr. Obaseki’s closest challenger, Osagie
Ize-Iyamu, got 253,173 votes.
Mr. Obaseki also won majority votes in
13 of the 18 local governments in the
state, losing the remaining five to the
PDP candidate.
The INEC chief returning officer in the
state, Professor Kayode Soremekun,
who announced the final results,
declared Mr. Obaseki the governor-
elect of the South-South state.
However, the PDP in the state has
rejected the results describing it as
adulterated.
“If you go by the results that were
announced at the polling units and
wards across the state, it shows the
PDP would have won by over 30,000

Fisayo Ajisola produces first movie ‘Road To Ruin’

Nollywood actress and producer,
Fisayo Ajisola is currently working on her new
movie titled “ Road To Ruin” in a bid to ensuring
crime free society.
The movie which examines the lives of banned
street hawkers in Lagos state came as a result of
the rampant cases of crimes and traffic congestion
which, according to the state government, aided
robbery, kidnap, killing, and other societal ills.
According to Ajisola, the movie is to draw the
attention of the federal government, states and
well-meaning Nigerians to the plight of young
Nigerians who have no means of survival,
education and jobs but to find means to make
their lives productive through menial jobs.

Ajisola, through her Non-Governmental
Organisation (NGO), Jewel Empowerment
Foundation (JEF), has solicited for a better
alternative from the government and also proffered
a lasting solution to the challenges of the
underprivileged and street hawkers in the new
flick.
The director of the movie, Tunde Olaoye, noted
that the short movie was a public service
announcement for the children on the street and
to encourage the government to look for a better
solution.
Veteran actor, Raphael Niyi Stephen, who is also
part of the project, said: “The movie is a way of
making people know what is happening to kids
and also to lend our voices to what the
government is doing about hawking, letting people
know hawking isn’t the last option.”

3 suspected rapists arrested for impregnating 14-year-old girl(Photo)

Three men have been arrested for allegedly raping and
impregnating a 14-year-old girl in the Agric, Ikorodu
area of Lagos State.
Punch learnt that the suspects – Kingsley Oke, Henry
Osadere and Francis Ekwe – were arrested in the
Majidun, Ikorodu area of Lagos State, before they were
transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja. It
was gathered that the suspects, who lived in the same
area with the parents of the teenager, identified only
as Ijeoma, allegedly raped the girl in August 2016,
after the mother went for a vigil.
It was gathered that Ijeoma, a primary 6 pupil, was
later discovered by the mother to be pregnant, and
she reported to the police at the Owutu division. The
police said the three men were arrested on September
9, 2016.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Ijeoma said one of the
suspects threatened to kill her if she disclosed the
rape to anyone.
She said, “It was Uncle Kingsley (Oke) who first
raped me. On that evening, he called me and
said he would send me on an errand. When I
went to his room, he immediately locked the
door.
“I started begging him, but he forcefully carried
me to his bed and raped me. On the second
occasion, it was one man called Baba Ijebu that
molested me. I had been sent to his house to
collect an item.
“While in his house, he raped me. I cried, but
he said I would die if I told anyone. The third
man was Henry (Osadere). I don’t want to talk
about it again.”
Forty-three-year-old Osadere, however, denied raping
Ijeoma, saying she was a wayward girl.
He said, “She came to my place and said she
had many boyfriends. I asked how a teenager
like her had several boyfriends. Anytime she
came to my apartment, she would steal some
items. That was why I sent her away.
“I was surprised that she said I was one of
those who raped her. She said she had a three-
month-old pregnancy. I don’t know the other
suspects. The girl lied against me. She knows the
people who messed around with her. It was
because I stopped her from coming to my house
that she lied against me.”
Oke, 30, a welder, said, “I have known the girl
since 2014. She usually came to my house to
play. She is a wayward girl. Everyone knows
about her promiscuity. I never raped her.”
Ekwe, 52, said Ijeoma and her mother had begged him
in August to borrow them some money, which he did,
adding that he did not rape the girl.
The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said
the suspects would be charged to court at the end of
investigations.

GaRankuwa police spokesman , Captain Matthews
Nkoadi, said the woman was taken to a place of

harm her . He said the woman ’ s mother came to
fetch her and she was released into her care.
Sangoma Nkanyezi Moropodi said the woman

Nigerian blogger detained for criticising governor in prison 10 days after

A Nigerian blogger who was arrested
last week for writing a controversial
blog post is still in detention without
bail.
Jamil Mabai was in police custody for
four days before being remanded in
prison by Magistrate Court in Katsina,
which declined to try him.
The court adjourned the case to
September 29 because defence lawyers
raised the issue of jurisdiction of the
court.
Mr. Mabai’s lawyer, Job Israel, had
filed two applications, one for his
fundamental human right and another
for bail.
The court is expected to rule on the
applications at its sitting on Thursday.
“The ruling tomorrow will determine
whether the law (under which Mr.
Mabai is being charged) is a dead law
or an existing law,” said Mr. Israel. “If
the case is in our favour tomorrow,
that means Mr. Mabai case is
terminated forever. But if not, we will
have to appeal based on our
submissions.”
Mr. Israel says a magistrate court lacks
the authority to remand or try Mr.
Mabai. He said the offence his client
was accused of was unknown to law.
“Section 36 subsections 4 of the
Constitution of Federal Republic of
Nigeria 1999 as amended prohibit a
court to try an offence that is
unknown to law,” he averred.
Mr. Mabai is currently being held at the Central
Prison in Katsina.
Metal coffins
Mr. Mabai, who publishes Cliqq magazine, was
arrested by officers of the Nigerian Police Force on
Monday in Kaduna.
He is a known critic of the Katsina administration
led by Governor Aminu Masari.
Mr. Mabai’s arrest is believed to have been ordered
by the governor, a claim the latter’s spokesperson
denied.
A family friend of Mr. Mabai told PREMIUM TIMES
that the governor was not happy with his recent
post condemning a recent purchase of 3,000 metal
coffins for distribution to mosques in the state.
Mr. Mabai said by purchasing the coffins, Mr. Masari
was simply saying “Katsina people deserve to die”.
He also questioned the rationale behind buying the
coffins at N40,000 each at a time the government was
unable to pay civil servants’ outstanding arrears of
salaries.
Mr. Mabai was arrested last Monday in Kaduna
where he had gone for the Eid el kabir Sallah
celebration.
“The police followed him from Katsina to Kaduna
and arrested him there,” a family source said.
“When they picked him up, they first took him to
Unguwan Sanusi police station before they
proceeded to Kankara local government area and
finally Katsina town.”
Friends and relatives of the blogger were
apprehensive of his whereabouts, until the police
finally charged him to court.
Mr. Mabai himself posted a tweet saying, “Finally
they have taken us to court at GRA, including one
other Social Media activist, Bishir Dauda”.
He said “as soon as the matter was announced, the
judge said he cannot entertain the matter for lack of
jurisdiction”.
He said the judge ordered that the accused be taken
to prison pending when he would be arraigned at a
separate court.
Efforts to speak with the spokesperson of the Police
in Katsina, Salisu Agaida, were unsuccessful as his
phone line could not be reached.
Police Speak
However, media reports had quoted the state
Commissioner of Police, Usman Abdullahi,
explaining why the blogger was arrested.
Mr. Abdullahi said Mr. Mabai was detained for
posting tweets to say the government bought the
coffins because it wanted people to die.
“The state government complained that Jamil wrote
that it had bought 3,000 coffins and distributed to
mosques and may be it wanted Katsina people to
die.
“Any reasonable person will ask one or two
questions. This is why we had to invite him to assist
the police,” he said.
When contacted, the spokesperson to Mr. Masari,
Abdu Labaran, denied that the state reported the
blogger to the police.
“To the best of my knowledge, the state government
did not complain about any blogger to anybody.
Unless it is done without my knowledge,” he said.
Mr. Labaran also said he spent the whole day with
the governor on Thursday and “no mention was
made of the arrest or arraignment of anyone on the
orders of the governor.”
Going after bloggers
Also arraigned alongside Mr. Mabai are Bashir Dauda
and Umar Faruq. They were all accused of writing
about the story with the intent to cause civil
disturbance and expose Mr. Masari to public
ridicule.
Their arrest and arraignment is coming on the heels
of the arrest and detention two weeks ago of another
blogger, Emenike Iroegbu, on the orders of Governor
Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State.
Mr. Iroegbu who publishes Abia Facts Newspaper
was accused of defaming Mr. Ikpeazu.
He allegedly published a story accusing the governor
of burying a nine-year-old boy in the government
House, Umuahia.
Another blogger, Abubakar Usman, was recently
arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial
Crimes Comkission, EFCC, accused him of “cyber
stalking”.
Mr. Usman was released after much public
condemnation.

Nigerian Senators abandon legislative duty for Saraki’s forgery trial

Senate President Bukola Saraki

Nigeria’s Senators did not report for business on
Wednesday – one of the three days the National
Assembly has for plenary in a week – for no reason
other than the resumed trial of their presiding
officers.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and his Deputy, Ike
Ekweremadu, are facing trial for allegedly forging
Senate Rules that brought them to power in a suit
filed by the Federal Government in June before a
High Court in Abuja.
The alleged conspirators of Messrs. Saraki and
Ekweremadu were former Clerk to the National
Assembly, Salisu Maikasu, and his deputy, Benedict
Efeturi.
The trial resumed today, Wednesday, and in manner
similar to early days of Mr. Saraki’s trial at Code of
Conduct Tribunal for charges bordering on false
assets declaration, the Senate did not open for
plenary.
Not all the Senators followed Messrs. Saraki and
Ekweremadu to court today, but about 40 of them
did.
Since the National Assembly was inaugurated in
June 9 last year, the Senate has sat for 112 days,
giving an 11-day difference between the upper
legislative arm and the House of Representatives
which has sat for 123 days, including Wednesday’s
session.
In the first year, June 9, 2015 – June 9 , 2016, the
Senate and the House of Representatives sat for 96
and 104 times respectively, falling far short of 181
days required by the constitution.
Since the lawmakers failed to sit for the mandatory
181 days, lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, said they
should not be entitled to full payment.
Since the two presiding officers, Messrs Saraki and
Ekweremadu, are being tried at a time, one of the
Senators said, the Senate will continue to be shut on
the days they are going for trial.
The Senator, seeking not to be named, said the
Senate could have passed a resolution to make a
“floor member” preside in the absence of Messrs
Saraki and Ekweremadu.
“But they (the presiding officers) wouldn’t want that
so as to show that their trial has implications for
national legislative business,” said the Senator;
adding, “everybody is using power where he has
strength.”
Senate spokesperson, Aliyu Sabi, could not be
reached on phone for comment on this story.

How Nigerian government plans to sell national asset – Official

The Nigerian government plans to sell
only some percentage of its
shareholding in selected asset, and will
not sell entire national property, a top
presidency source has told PREMIUM
TIMES.
The government also intends to retains
the right to buy back the shares in
future, the source said.
The source asked not to be named
because of the sensitivity of the issue.
The comments came as more Nigerians
kick against the government’s plan to
sell asset as a way of lifting the
economy out of recession.
Aliko Dangote, and Senate President,
Bukola Saraki, were amongst the first
to call for the sale of national asset in
the face of economic crisis. Mr.
Dangote called for the sale of NLNG
plant.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)
described those calling for the sale as
“economic vampires government must
beware of”.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior
Staff Association of Nigeria
(PENGASSAN) and the Trade Union
Congress (TUC) said the proposal was
“a self-destructive move”.
Prominent Nigerians, including former

9ice and Ruggedman reunited on stage for the first time in Six years

The 6-year feud between Nigerian
musicians 9ice and Ruggedman came to an end
early this year with a series of open letters.
The peace accord was further confirmed when the
duo released a joint together titled ‘Religion’.
Then they took it a step further on Sunday
September 25, 2016 at Troy Lounge, Lekki during
Ruggedman’s TWS fashion party where he
unveiled new T-shirt designs for 2016/17.
During the show, 9ice hit the stage with his
classic tune ‘Gbamu Gbamu’ before Ruggedman
joined him as they performed their new
collaboration ‘Religion’ and the crowd loved it.
