YABATECH To Resume Today After Fire Incident

The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) will resume academic activities on Wednesday after a fire incident that affected the institution’s female hostel.
Dr Charles Oni, Director, Public Relations Unit of the college disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview.
Oni also said the institution will begin its second semester examination on the same date.
The fire incident had left several students with injuries, some of whom were hospitalised.
Oni said: “Academic activities will resume on Tuesday, Nov. 29, while examination continues on Wednesday.

“ As at Friday, when the representative of the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, visited the college, only two students were still on admission at the Military Hospital, Yaba.
“The college did not completely close; normal work is going except the academic activities that were suspended.’’

ASUU to Begin One Week Strike Warning

The academic union of universities (ASUU) have declared a one week warning strike from the 16th of November to 22nd 2016, to protest the failure of government to implement the 2009 agreement with the union. The union is also accusing the government of turning the establishment of universities into constituency projects to score political point, saying the union remain opposed to such establishment. Addressing a news conference at the end of its emergency National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, National President of the union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi said despite several efforts by the union to get the government to respect the tenets of their agreement, the government has failed to do do, causing anxiety among lecturers in the universities. He listed the area of disagreement between the union and government to include payment of fraction do staff entitlement and the denial of staff entitlement in respect of earned academic allowance amounting to about N128 billion, funding of universities for revitalization and the refusal to register the the Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company by the National Compensation Commission.
Others include the introduction of the Treasury Single Account shunning said affects university autonomy, decrease in budgetary allocation to education and the refusal by government to renegotiation of the 2009 agreement which was due for renegotiation since 2012.
He said: “Our members across the nation are worried that six months after the meeting with the Minister of Education and a series of letters to amplify the need to respect the spirit and letters of the 2009 agreement and the 2013 MoU, there has been no tangible results of the issues raised.
“This failure puts ASUU leadership in a severe difficulty responding to enquiries from members of the union about the state of affairs in our engagement with the federal government.
“Following a nationwide consultation with out membership, the National Executive Council of ASUU rose from its meeting on Sunday, 13th November with a resolution to embark on a one week warning strike starting from Wednesday, 16th November, 2016.
“The nation wide strike action is total and comprehensive. While if last, there shall be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meeting of any kind in any of our branches.
“We use this opportunity to call on all education loving Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to prevail on the government to address the patriotic demands of ASUU. For us in ASUU, we shall not surrender until the Nigerian university system is repositioned for transforming the country and global competitiveness.” On the establishment of more universities by not the federal and state government, he said: “we are not against democratizing university education by providing more opportunities. But we also believe that if government followed the path which if had agreed on, universities will not be made constituency projects as we are beginning to see.
“When you say every state must have a university without doing your home work and every governor think that a university must be established in their constituency, it then means we are not paying attention to quality, but using the establishment of universities to make political point.
“That is what we are against. In other places, what they do as a part of the democratization of university education is to expand facilities, open space for more students to come, me prove the quality of laboratories, library and offices. We are not seeing that happening here. Government is how turning establishment of university into constituency project and that is not acceptable to us.”
Prof. Ogunyomi said the union and Nigerians have not see any light at the end of the tunnel in terms of the change promised by the APC led federal government, saying “this government is not different from the previous one because it is the same ruling class.
“We have not found genuine patriots who will do things differently. Our expectations and hopes were raised when we heard the word change. But what we have had so far is just cosmetic. We have not really had the radical change that Nigerians
yearned for.
“A radical departure from from the past has not happened and until that happens, we cannot have a change that will lead to transformation. That is the position of ASUU and we have always said it. Because of the penchant.

YABATECH honours 12 outstanding alumni in Art industry

Authorities of the Yaba College of
Technology, Lagos on Tuesday, honoured 12
alumni of its School of Art, Design and Printing for
their outstanding performances in the art industry,
authorities.
According to sources, the award would be a big
boost to attract youths to embracing art industry,
which is showing positive contribution to the
nation’s GDP.
Despite a contraction in Nigeria’s second quarter
GDP, activity in the arts, entertainment and
recreation sector contributed 0.26 per cent, a rise
from the 0.24 percent in the second quarter of
2015.
The alumni are Olumide Oresegun, Abass Kelani,
Folami Rasaq, Ejiro Amos-Tafiri, Ngozi Schommers
and Taiye Idahor.
Others include Richardson Ovbiebor, John
Adeyemo, Sonde Ibukun, Stanley Ohikhvare,
Ayodeji Balogun and Soji Kuforiji.
The awardees displayed several genre of
articulation at the maiden edition of the Home

A UNILORIN Medicine Graduate has made history after
she won 19 prizes at the University's 32nd Convocation
ceremony.

Yusuf Ololade Faidat
Yusuf Ololade Faidat is not just brilliant, she is also an
outstanding pacesetter. The super brilliant woman who
is one of the graduands at the University of Ilorin 32nd
convocation ceremony took home 19 prizes yesterday.
Dailytrust reports that Faidat, who is in her early 20s
beat the men in her department to win the prize for the
best graduating student from the Department of
Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences.
She received the prize of N20,000 awarded each session
by the Senate to the student adjudged to be the best in
each faculty.
She also got another prize of N10,000, awarded by the
Senate to the best student in each department. Faidat
also took home prizes for best student in the
departments of Behavioural Sciences, Pathology,
Community medicine, Paediatrics and child health,
Medicine, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and gynaecology
and Surgery.
Also, out of the 12 endowed prizes and scholarships,
Faidat got 10 of them which are; the Henry Adewoye
prize for best graduating student in Chemical pathology,
Late Dr. Hamza Olayinka Brimoh prize for best
graduating student in Medicine, Prof. Mathew Akinyemi
Araoye prize for best graduating student in Medicine,
Abdullahi Mohammed/Ilorin community prize for best
graduating student in Child health.

The Deputy Executive Secretary of the National
University Commission (NUC), Prof. Chinedu Mafiana,
who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the
occasion, urged the University of Ilorin to retain her.
He warned university managers in the country against
wasteful spending, saying any fund made available to
them should be spent on productive activities.
“The government is aware of the hardship the citizens
are going through at the moment but I want to assure all
Nigerians that we shall overcome the present economic
doldrums. Our country is blessed with great
potentialities and resources that have yet to be
harnessed. The task to restore our country to economic
prosperity does not depend on government alone. All of
us, men and women of our great country must be
involved in the struggle to build a viable and virile
country for the general well-being”, he said.

UNILAG Expels 125, Rusticates 198 Students

The management of the University of Lagos
(UNILAG) has expelled 125 students and
rusticated 198 others after they were found
guilty of various misconducts such as
examination malpractices during last
academic session, smoking band
substances such as Marijuana in hall of
residence, impersonation in examination
halls and others.
According to the Deputy Registrar
(Information), Toyin Adebule, names and
photos of the affected students have been
published on the school's website and will
soon be published in the media alongside
their photographs.

UNILORIN Speaks On Born Again Student Who Withdrew From School Over Religious Belief

Authorities of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State on
Sunday said that they had accepted the voluntary
withdrawal of a student, Jephtaph Abolarin, from the
institution.
Abolarin, a 300-Level Sociology student, had written to
the university confessing to cheating during his West
African Senior School Certificate Examination.
Abolarin, who claimed he had become a ‘born again’
Christian, said continuing his university education,
using an unmerited certificate was unjust and
immoralHe wrote the letter to the institution’s Deputy
Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Sidiqat Ijaiya, on
August 5, 2016.
According to him, he wanted to withdraw from the
school because he got his WASSCE through examination
malpractice.
Reacting to the letter on Sunday, the university Deputy
Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, confirmed
the withdrawal of the student.
Akogun, who noted that the Senate of the university had
accepted the withdrawal letter, added that the Vice-
Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, commended
Abolarin for his repentance and sincerity.
The VC, Akogun added, wished Abolarin well in his
future endeavour.
Part of Abolarin’s letter to the DVC read,
“Just as a house that was built on a faulty
foundation will surely collapse, it is also certain
that a career that is built on a faulty foundation
will definitely collapse. All through my secondary
school days, I was just a church ‘goer’, without
genuine salvation and the fear of God. As a
result, I got my WASSCE result through
examination malpractice.
“By the grace of God, now, I have encountered
the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which
called for repentance and restitution.
“Sir, with deep conviction, I have realised that
there is no point building my academic career on
a faulty foundation; since the WASSCE result I got
through malpractice is the basis in which my
admission into this university was anchored.
“Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from the
university and start all over again.”

ASUU denies plans to embark on strike on October 2nd

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has
denied media reports saying it was planning to embark
on a one-week warning strike. The News Agency of
Nigeria NAN yesterday quoted the Chairman of the
University of Abuja chapter of ASUU, Ben Ugheoke, as
saying the union will on October 2nd embark on a one
week warning strike to press home their demands fro
the full implementation of the 2009 agreements they had
with the Federal government.
In an interview with Premiumtimes today, Ugheoke
denied making such an announcement in an interview
he granted a NAN reporter.
“A certain reporter in NAN is responsible for this
damage. As a result of this falsified report, I am
facing a panel later tonight from ASUU National
body. I have reached out to the NAN reporter and
he told me it was a mix-up. He also begged me
to save his job. We have never given a date for
any form of strike, whether warning strike or full
blown strike. There was nothing like a date fixed
for a strike” he said.
Ugheoke says he hopes the agency will release a
rebuttal to the false report soon. ASUU on August 31st,
threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the
non-implementation of its 2009 agreement with the
Federal Government.

ASUU To Begin One Week Warning Strike Oct 2nd

The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU will
begin a warning strike from October 2nd. The union
disclosed this in a statement signed by the
Chairman, University of Abuja chapter of ASUU.
“We have tried to dialogue with the Federal
Government but they have been playing
games with us; we will start with a warning
strike to show them we are not jokers. ASUU
has being trying to get the attention of the
Federal Government to intervene in the
academic system of universities across
Nigeria but it has all been abortive.
Consequently, ASUU will give a warning strike
which will start on Oct. 2nd. The strike will
last for one week, and if they do not give us
listening ears, we will start the indefinite
strike in November,” the statement read.
The academic union has been at loggerheads with
the Federal government over the non-
implementation of its 2009 agreement with the FG.
Among the demands of ASUU includes the exclusion
of Nigerian universities from Pension Management
Company, non-release of NEEDS Assessment
Intervention Fund, funding of state universities,
payment of earned academic allowance and
renegotiation of the agreements were part of the
outstanding issues that have not also been
addressed.

Unizik Screening Exam Application Begins, Registration Ends Sept 30th

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University has scheduled its
2016/2017 Post UTME Screening Exercise for candidates
who chose the University as first choice. The candidates

required to apply for the screening exercise.

Applications for screening start today Wednesday 14th
and slated to end on Friday 30th September, 2016.
2. Eligibility
i. Candidates who made Nnamdi Azikiwe University their

UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) of

3. Registration Procedures

41 Nigerian Scholarship Students Sue Alabama State University Over Racism

In a legal case filed last week in a federal court in the
U.S, 41 Nigerian nationals, many of whom are now
Alabama State University alumni, alleged that the school
overcharged them for books and meals, enrolled them in
classes they never took, and more, all because they were
black foreigners.
An ASU alumni, Jimmy Iwezu, who claims the university
intentionally mismanaged millions from a scholarship
fund set up by the Nigerian government that was paid in
advance for every exchange student, claimed that: “They
called us cash cows. I am a black man and I am proud to
be black, but I felt discriminated against.”
The 37-year-old Iwezzu, who is a social work graduate,
cited the school’s selfproclaimed autonomy to do
whatever it wished with the seven-figure sum Nigeria
prepaid back in 2013 for some 41 students to go to the
school.
But the students’ Attorney, Julian McPhillips, who
brought the lawsuit to court for the second time, the
first attempt, back in April, accused the school of
breaching its contract with Nigeria and was dismissed,
suggested that ASU violated Title VI civil rights.
The students alleged they were shorted their deserved
monies by ASU “because of their Nigerian national
origin,” according to the lawsuit. McPhillips, who told
The Daily Beast, contended that ASU hammered the
students with exorbitant “billing” and they weren’t
“being treated like other students” when the school
allegedly inflated the costs of staples like books and
room and board, and repurposed the funds to pay for the
school’s “bond issues” and to help front costs for “a
new stadium,” and, ironically, a centre for civil rights
awareness.
“The school acted in a really disingenuous and
selfserving way,” he said. While most college students
are permitted to bargain shop for textbooks wherever
they wish or dine at different establishments beyond the
school cafeterias, the Nigerian nationals at ASU,
according to the federal complaint, were boxed in.
The lawsuit claims “they were not allowed by ASU to
spend this money, but instead the money was credited
towards certain expenses the students incurred, or
towards other expenses ASU incurred that were unrelated
to the students.” “The school compelled us to buy
books from the book store and eat only at the cafeteria,”
Iwezu said.
“I tried to make them understand, ‘Hey, we don’t want to
live in the dorms anymore, and we don’t want to eat our
entire meals at the dorms.” He said greed-trumped
reason, while also insisting that: “They want our
money.” he said.
Iwezu said the surcharge to live on campus was raised
specifically for him and his Nigerian counterparts. “They
make us pay $3,000 (a semester) to live in the dorms,
and that is more than a mortgage on homes in this area,”
he added.
Back in 2013, a geography professor at ASU for almost
three decades, Dr. David Iyegha, made a pilgrimage to
Lagos State, where he served as the school’s
ambassador to recruit fellow Nigerians with a mandate
to attract its best and brightest to relocate to
Montgomery, Alabama, for their higher education.
“I went to Nigeria with one other faculty member and
recruited these students to be sponsored by the
Nigerian Federal Government,” Iyegha told The Daily
Beast. But today, he is withered in regret, saying: “I feel
very, very bad because I was the one who was
instrumental in bringing these students to the campus.”
Iyegha, whose son is currently on a Ph.D. track at ASU,
feels like he let down so many promising prospects. He
said: “(Nigeria) paid for everything, including their
books, and all of the money is supposed to be given to
the students so they can buy this or that. But the
college refused to release any of that money at all for
the past three years. “While the money was prepaid and
guaranteed by the Federal Government, that didn’t grant
the school carte blanche on how it was supposed to be
spent,” he said.
“I asked them, ‘Why are you treating these kids like
this? Why are you depriving them?’ and after talking to
them at length, they told me they spent all the money
and there is no money left.” An ASU spokesman told The
Daily Beast that “since it’s pending litigation against our
university, Alabama State University has no comment.”

LASU 1st Online Admission Screening 2016: Eligibility , Screening And Registration Details

admission via UTME (100 level).

190 marks are eligible to participate in the First
Online Admission Screening Exercise. In addition,
candidates must be at least 16 years of age.
ii. ALL Direct Entry candidates who wish to be
considered for admission into Lagos State University
for the 2016/2017 academic session, who must have
obtained Direct Entry Form from JAMB are also
eligible and must apply for the screening exercise.
iii. Candidates of Lagos State Origin, for 100 & 200
levels will be required (if admitted) to prove their
claims before the Independent Indigeneship
Verification Committee (lIVC) set up by the Lagos
State University.
iv. Candidates should note that ONLY the accredited
courses listed below are available for the 2016/2017
Academic Session. Therefore, only candidates that
have chosen any of the under listed courses should
apply.

before participating in the online Admission
Screening.
In the Screening step, Candidates are expected to
fill-in ONLY FIVE (5) BEST RELEVANT subjects as
contained in JAMB Brochure 2016 online.

UNIZIK Students Appear in Primary Schooluniforms, Socks To Celebrate Graduation

Graduating Students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe university
(UNIZIK), Awka, Theatre and Film Studies Department
yesterday shut down the campus with their style to
celebrate their final day in school.
The final year, graduating students in a happy mood,
appeared in a Primary schools uniforms, socks and
knapsack bags for their final examination.
In their uniforms, they all marched, danced and sang
different nursery and primary school rhymes.

NECO to combine common entrance tests for unity schools

The National Examination Council (NECO) says it has
adjusted the National Common Entrance
Examination (NCCE) for admission into Federal
Government Colleges in line with the education
minister’s directive.
NECO’s FCT Zonal Coordinator, Abdul Mustapha, who
spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on
Tuesday in Abuja, said the first and second tests had
been collapsed into one.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on
Monday announced the cancellation of the interview
test for NCCE organised by NECO.
Mr. Adamu directed the council to strengthen its
examination processes with a view to achieving a
quality and credible NCCE for admission into unity
schools at the first test.
According to the minister, whatever inputs that are
needed to be made into the first examination should
be done.
He added that multiple examinations did not
necessarily translate into the admission of quality
pupils into secondary schools.
“In line with the minister’s directive, NECO has
already taken care of the technical aspect of the
examination by re-adjusting the first test.
“The first test, which is mainly achievement test
written as paper one and the second test which is
mainly aptitude test written as paper two, are to be
written at one sitting within the same time frame of
the existing timetable arrangement.
“So, from NECO’s perspective, the one exam will
technically yield the same result,’’ he said.
Mr. Mustapha said that the minister’s directive was
sequel to an earlier submission by NECO’s Registrar,
Prof. Abdulrashid Garba, to combine the two tests
into one composite examination.
